Chromecast Chrome extension available for download from Chrome Web Store

Those lucky enough to snag a Chromecast

have something exciting to look forward to when their new device arrives: the ability to fling music, video, and web content from most any computer with Google’s Chrome browser installed to an attached TV. That functionality, shown at a press conference earlier today, is made possible in part by a Chrome extension, available for download now from the Chrome Web Store.

According to Google, the Chromecast extension adds UI elements to help facilitate the sending of content to TV. Netflix and YouTube, for example, will gain a “cast” button when the extension is active. In addition, the extension contains an experimental feature that’ll mirror a Chrome browser tab to any Chromecast-connected TV. (Google cautions a fast PC and Wi-Fi are a necessity.)

Here’s the full description from the Chrome Web Store:

The Google Cast extension enables you to find and play content on your Chromecast device from your Chrome browser. When on Cast optimized sites like YouTube and Netflix, you’ll see new options that let you play video on your TV via Chromecast – using your computer as a remote to browse for videos and to control playback. You can also cast any of your tabs in Chrome to your TV, letting you enjoy sites, photos, or even video from the best screen in your home. Note that this feature is still in beta, and requires a fast computer and Wi-Fi network.
